Upholstery Foam / Custom Foam
What thicknesses of foam do you carry? Can I get exactly the thickness I need?
Because we custom cut every piece of foam to order, we can do any thickness you need. Most customers order upholstery foam ranging from ½ inch up to 8 inches thick. As a general guide: 1 and 2 inch foam are common for mattress toppers and light padding; 3 inch foam is typical for outdoor cushions; 4 and 5 inch foam is standard for sofa and chair seat cushions; and 6 to 8 inch foam suits deep, oversized, or modern-style sofas. Thicker foam costs more, and because foam is an oil-based product, prices can shift when oil costs change. The table above shows sample pricing on our 2.5 lb density foam for a 25 × 30 inch piece across all common thicknesses. Contact us for a current quote on your exact size.
Q: What's the difference between regular foam and high-density upholstery foam — and which should I choose?
There isn't really a "standard" foam that's suitable for seating. White craft foam is cheap and fine for back cushion stuffing or light padding, but it compresses quickly and isn't suitable for seat cushions. Quality upholstery foam is typically blue, green, or gold in colour and contains a higher rubber content, which is what gives it its resilience and support. For any seating application — sofas, dining chairs, office chairs — you need a high-density seat foam with at least a 2 lb compression rating. We also carry extra-firm upholstery foam and high-density extra-firm options for customers who prefer a firmer sit or need foam that will hold up under very heavy daily use. Not sure which grade is right for you? Just ask — we're happy to talk it through.
Q: Can you cut foam to a custom shape — not just a rectangle?
Yes, we can cut to almost any shape — curves, angles, and irregular outlines. We handle most custom cut foam orders in-house. For very complex or unusual shapes, we may need to send the work to our manufacturer, but we'll let you know upfront. Whether it's upholstery foam cut to size for a standard sofa or foam for upholstery cushions with a curved front edge, we can usually accommodate it.
Q: I need new cushions for my outdoor patio set. Can you help?
Absolutely. Outdoor furniture foam replacement is one of our most popular services. Most patio furniture comes with fibre-fill cushions that compress and deteriorate quickly — replacing the inserts with quality outdoor upholstery foam makes a huge difference in comfort and longevity. We can also sew new cushion covers in weather-resistant, waterproof outdoor fabric. Custom outdoor cushions start from $80 per cushion.
Q: Can you make new cushions for a window seat, RV, or boat?
Yes — we've done many of these projects. Window seat cushions, bay window benches, dinette seats, boat cushions, and RV mattress toppers and sleeping berths are all things we handle regularly. It's become especially popular to renovate and redecorate vintage RVs and campers, and professionally made custom foam cushions make a remarkable difference to the finished look. We cut the foam inserts and sew the covers, so it's a complete service.
Q: I just need the foam insert — I don't need new covers. Is that okay?
Of course. If you just want to buy upholstery foam or cushion foam cut to size, that's perfectly fine. Simply email or call us with your measurements and we'll give you a price. Foam cut to size starts from $30 per piece.Q: Can you make replacement cushions for dining chairs?Yes. Dining chair seat cushion foam replacement is something we do often. If your chairs have a curved or shaped seat, we can cut the foam to match that profile. We can also sew covers if needed. It's a simple, affordable upgrade that makes a big difference to everyday comfort.
Q: I've seen foam referred to as "couch sponge" or "upholstery sponge" or "padding"— is that the same thing?
Yes, exactly the same thing. Upholstery sponge is just an older or informal term for upholstery foam — you'll still hear it used, especially for sofa sponge replacement or when describing the foam padding inside cushions. Whether you call it sponge or foam, we know what you need and we can help.
